Using their cultural and linguistic ties, South Asian citizens across the United States, including Colorado, organized in the 2020 election under “They See Blue” – a grassroot organization charged with mobilizing and engaging South Asian Americans in the democratic process to help Democrats win federal, state and local elections. With over 4000 members across 23 states, they turned in a powerhouse performance.
In Colorado, TSB members canvassed 18,000 Democrat and unregistered voters over phone banking, reaching out to over 3000 people in a letter writing campaign. Their phone banking pick up rates were over 20% for several weeks and 7% on our worst week. Compare that to the 3% average pick up rate.
One of the most important factors in their success is that their outreach is based on trust as South Asians reach out to fellow South Asians. That trust helped intensely in campaigning for the Democratic Party to address various voter registration problems that otherwise would have fallen through the cracks. With familiar sounding last names, languages, and culture they were able to connect with the voters and encourage them to vote and assist with removing any hurdles getting their ballot and voting.

Who Are South Asians?
South Asian Americans share similar languages, culture, tradition and values. They differ significantly in all these aspects with the larger Asian American Community in the US. We use the term “South Asian” to include those who claim descent from these countries:
